The plant you pass down. The Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) builds a miniature tree out of thick, coin round leaves, slowly enough that yours can outlast apartments, jobs, and decades.

Long considered a symbol of luck and prosperity, jade suits a sunny sill where its trunk thickens year over year into something genuinely bonsai like.

Jade Plant care

  • Light: Real sun, at least four hours. A south window is perfect.
  • Water: When leaves lose their firm snap, soak and drain well.
  • Soil: Gritty succulent mix prevents the one thing that kills jade: wet feet.
  • Pets: Toxic to cats and dogs, so shelf it out of reach.
  • Growth: Slow, woody, and permanent feeling.

How do you make a Jade Plant bushy?

Sun and pruning. Pinch the growing tips in spring and the stem branches where you cut, doubling the canopy over time. Leggy jade is almost always a light problem, so move it closer to the window before anything else.
