Red Prayer Plant Maranta (Maranta leuconeura erythroneura)
Red veins. Folded hands. Instant character. The Red Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura erythroneura) draws scarlet lines over olive green leaves, then folds the whole show away at sunset.
It is the most photographed Maranta for a reason, and it lives happily on a shelf, a dresser, or the corner of a desk that could use some life.
Red Prayer Plant care
- Light: Indirect light keeps the red veins vivid. Shield it from midday sun.
- Water: Small, steady drinks that keep the root zone barely damp.
- Feed: A diluted feed once a month through spring and summer.
- Pets: Completely pet friendly.
- Growth: Spreads wide rather than tall, around a foot high.
How much light does a Red Prayer Plant need?
Less than you would guess. It evolved on the rainforest floor, so bright shade suits it perfectly. If the leaves stay open flat all day, it may actually want a touch less light, not more.
